Renters Insurance - Why It's So Important

Posted by Deb May on Apr 25, 2017 11:37:00 AM

“We’ve lost everything! I don’t know what to do or where we’ll live.”  Our hearts go out to the victims of recent apartment fires in our area.  More than 50 people were displaced due to multi-family house fires in Athol, Fitchburg, Brockton and Taunton in the past month.   All the fires appear to have been started accidently such as by an electrical appliance in one of the apartments.  Even when the fire was put out before it spread to other units in the building, those other units were severely damaged by smoke and water.

3 Reasons to Schedule Valuable Items on Your Homeowner's Insurance

Posted by Deb May on Dec 16, 2016 12:31:50 PM

Over the years we all tend to fill our homes with stuff.  Most of it is the normal, everyday trappings that fill our lives.  But some of it is valuable - like your engagement ring, or your grandmother's pearls that you inherited, or the coin collection you've had since you were 10 years old.

With a typical renter's or homeowner's insurance policy, your personal property (furniture, clothing, jewelry, money, electronics, etc.) is covered under Coverage C while it is anywhere in the world.  That sounds great, but as with most things, there are limits.  For example, loss to personal property may be only covered if the loss is caused by certain perils.  And if it is covered, there may be limits such as $1,000 for jewelry, $200 for money and coins, $1,000 for watercraft or $2,000 for firearms.  Here are 3 reasons why it makes sense to schedule your valuable items:

If You're a Renter You May Want to Read This

Posted by Gaiyan Wu on Mar 2, 2016 11:30:00 AM

Just like homeowners who have homeowners insurance, renters will need renters insurance. Believe it or not, your personal property in your apartment is worth more than you think. Simply start adding up the costs of all your items and look at the total amount. It may surprise you to find out how much everything is worth.  If your apartment building suffered a major loss such as a fire, you may be unable to replace your belongings if you have to pay out of pocket. Anything can happen to your apartment and it would not be the responsibility of your landlord to repair or replace your personal property. Whether someone breaks into your apartment and steals your valuables or a fire happens in your building and destroys your property, you could lose everything. But with renters insurance, you could be covered for the damages to your property at its current market value (replacement cost) or the replacement cost minus depreciation (Actual Cash Value).

Renters Insurance: Why It's Important

Posted by Jim Pietro on Sep 28, 2011 10:42:14 AM

If you rent an apartment, townhouse, condo, or even a house, you may be wondering if you need insurance. After all, you may be thinking, isn't it the landlord's responsibility to insure the building? You're right about that. But think about this. What if your clothing and furniture were destroyed in a fire? Your laptop and jewelry were stolen? The destruction or loss of your possessions would almost certainly not be covered by your landlord's insurance.
